US TAFELTENNIS

History

start of a legend.

Over 65 years of pingpong history in Amsterdam.

Anno 1958

US stands for Universitaire Sportvereniging — University Sports Association. The Amsterdam student club, founded in 1950. Our table tennis section started in 1958.

By and for students, at the university. Halfway through the eighties we cut the cord with the UvA. Since then we’ve stood on our own feet. The academic vibe stayed.

Growth

Over the years we became a fixture of Amsterdam pingpong. Competitive teams at every level. A thriving recreational group. A club night that never skipped a beat.

Players came. Players stayed. Some for decades. That says enough.

The US Open

Our pride and joy: the US Open. An open club tournament where everyone’s welcome — recreational or seasoned, student or pro.

A day of tense rallies, sharp shots, and even sharper jokes. Bitterballen afterwards. Good times, high level.

Win it, and you write history. And the club title? It runs unbroken since 1958. See the full roll of honour of the club championships.

More than a tournament

US is more than league play and club nights. Once a year the whole club heads off together for the US weekend. And when summer comes, we swap the bat for a racket at the TannUS tournament — our stubborn little outing to actual tennis.

Traditions that invite themselves back every year. That’s the stuff history is made of.

Today

Students, professionals, retirees. Born-and-bred Amsterdammers and transplants. Beginners and diehards. What binds us is the love of the game.

Amsterdam’s most stubborn table tennis club. That’s what we were. That’s what we’ll stay.

More club history to come.
